Curated programme with Anna Dennis & BBC Philharmonic

Having given the world premiere of Three Pieces that Disappear, the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra are in the studio next week with soprano Anna Dennis to record a programme I’ve devised, for a live Radio 3 broadcast on 28 April.

The pieces are all about mirrors and portraits – Britten’s Two Portraits and Beautiful Caged Thing, my take on Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. Canonic mirroring drives both Schumann’s Studies in Canonic Form in my orchestration from 2018, and After Lassus, my take on Lassus’ imitative duets for voices and instruments.

Anna played the lead role in my opera Violet last year and also premiered my Wholesome Counsels for soprano and piano – it’s wonderful to work with her again.

I did a similar studio programme in 2021 with violinist Daniel Pioro, as part of my role as Composer-in-Association for the orchestra – I’m hoping to do another one with a third musical friend and collaborator next year.

The broadcast on BBC Radio 3 is at 2pm on 28 April and will be available for 30 days – tune in here.
