Sonata No. 2 in D Min (Tartini)

(Giuseppe Tartini arr. Tom Coult)

Tartini’s D Minor Sonata is originally written for solo violin, or rather for solo violin with some intermittent indications of potential keyboard accompaniment. It’s extremely spacious and evocative, with some strange and astringent dissonances.

My arrangement, made for Daniel Pioro and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, takes these qualities and runs with them. The outer movements are still and liquid – the middle one is fast and boisterous.
